A Brief History:Marshall was originally not a village at all, but rather a fishing spot in between the communities of Ohogamiut and Takshak. Marshall became a mining community in 1913 when gold was discovered and major mining at Willow Creek (approximately 4 miles from Marshall) took place until around 1954. After the mining period of Marshall, the town all but disappeared. However it has since reemerged as a Yup'ik community with nearly 400 inhabitants. Most people in Marshall depend heavily on subsistence activities such as hunting, fishing and berry picking. The favored
activities are boating, snowmachining, swimming, dancing and playing sports such as basketball. Marshall School in connection with the community works hard to embrace Yup'ik traditions, while at the same time reaching towards the future and preparing students for life in any setting.
