What should I send?
Many teachers send boxes from the Lower 48. However, they soon discover that it is extremely expensive. For example, a 24”x18”x12” box weighing 25 pounds mailed from Little Rock, AR or Billings, MT is $32, uninsured. From the Seattle, WA area, the costis $25. The same box sent from Anchorage is $9. Everything you could possibly need can be purchasedin Anchorage and sent from there.
Many teachers also send their food items (nonperishables) for the entire year, or at least until the December break. Though this may cost upwards of a
couple of thousands dollars at the outset, it will save you money in the long run.
Sam's Club and COSTCO are the places to stock-up on the staples-flour, salt, sugar, brown sugar, coffee, tea, rice, milk, and canned goods. Buy in BULK.
Don’t forget toiletries, cleaning supplies, and boxes (and “duct tape”) for shipping, too. Memberships are inexpensive at both places.
A large number of stores, including Wal-Mart and Fred Meyer, do “Bush” orders, which means they will shopand ship items for you. There is generally a 15 to 30% charge, plus postage, on your total bill for this service. In terms of personal items to send, comfortable, casual clothing is the norm.
There may be a few occasions were a nice “dress” outfit is appropriate.
If you already have winter gear, send it to your site. It’s likely that you will not need it until October. From October to April, it is district policy to wear snow pants, winter boots and coat, headwear, and gloves while traveling in-district and out-of-district. Many people find a facemask and goggles helpful, too.
Sleeping bags also come in handy if you travel to other sites as a chaperone or coach.
