The Alakanuk School is currently in the planning stages to replace the entire school facility. As of the fall 2008, plans have been made to demolish the high school building with this project and convey ownership of the elementary building to the Alakanuk Tribal Council. As of December 2008 this project is on the Alaska Department of Education and Early Developments list of school construction projects as the No. 1 project in the State. Final size of the facility when constructed will be 53,900 sq. ft. and will house all of the Alakanuk K-12 students. Currently plans are to build the facility upon the apron of the existing runway. A new airport for Alakanuk is to open the summer of 2009. If funding is
secured from the Legislature during the 2009 Legislative Session construction of this project would be scheduled to begin in the spring, 2010. During the 2008-2009 school year, the Alakanuk School housed 236 K-12 students, over twice as many as the buildings were designed for. |
