Scammon Bay Community
Scammon Bay is located to the north of the Askinuk Mountains on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta on the south bank of the Kun River, one mile from the
Bering Sea. The village was known in Yup’ik as “Mariagamiut”. The village was named after the nearby bay, which honors Captain Charles M.
Scammon who served as marine chief of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition in Alaska from 1857-67.
The name Scammon Bay came into standard usage when a post office of the same name was establishedin 1951.
