Pilot Station is located on the northwest bank of the Yukon River, eleven miles east of St. Mary’s, and 26
miles west of Fortuna Ledge on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The village was first called “Ankachak”. Later,
the village moved .3 miles upriver to a site called “Potiliuk”.

R.H. Sergeant of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted on a field sheet that the village name
was Pilot Station in 1916. Local riverboat pilots who used Pilot Station as a checkpoint were
responsible for this name change.
Approximate population 585.
