Mountain Village was named for its location at the first “mountain” encountered by those traveling up the Yukon River. It is on the north bank of the Yukon River, approximately 20 miles west of St. Mary’s. Mountain Village was a summer fish-camp site until the opening of a general store in the village in 1908 prompted immigration by the residents of two small upriver settlements, Liberty Landing and Johnny’s Place.
Its scenic setting, rather than its strategic location set Mountain Village apart as a regional center at the turn of the century. |
