Marshall, also known as Fortuna Ledge, is located on
the east bank of Poltes Slough, north of Arbor Island on
the east bank of the Yukon River in the Yukon-
Kuskokwim Delta. The first historical reference to this
village comes from records kept by an expedition, which
came upon the Yup’ik village of Uglovaia at this site in
1880. The next mention of the village is on July 15,
1913, when gold was discovered on nearby Wilson
Creek. With the inevitable stampede, the settlement
quickly became a mining camp. Its location on a
channel of the Yukon River was convenient for riverboat
landings. The village became known as Fortuna Ledge.
Soon after, the first post office was established in 1915.

Later the village was name for Thomas Riley Marshall (1854-1925), vice president of the United States under Woodrow Wilson from 1913-21. At that time, the
village was known as Marshall’s Landing. The village incorporated as Fortuna Ledge in 1970. Even though the official name of the city is Fortuna Ledge, it is still
commonly referred to as Marshall.
Approximate population 340.
