Kotlik is located on the east bank of the Kotlik Slough, 35 miles northeast of Emmonak in the YukonKuskokwim Delta, a location that allows easy access by barge and large riverboat. Prior to the mid-1960’s, Kotlik was a small settlement of only five or six families. At about that time, the channel from the Norton Sound to the village of Chaniliut, another small community nearby, became too shallow for barge traffic.
After Chaniliut became inaccessible to the oil and freight barges serving the delta, the 30 residents of Chaniliut moved to Kotlik. Residents of the nearby villages of Hamilton, Bill Moore’s Slough, and Pastoliak also moved to Kotlik in the early 1960’s after construction of a school by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Approximate population 575. |
